Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros Review: The Ultimate Enemies to Lovers Slow Burn Romantasy?
If you are endlessly searching for the best enemies to lovers slow burn romantasy, you have almost certainly seen Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros completely taking over your social media feeds. But when a book gets this much hype, you have to ask: does the tension between the main characters actually deliver, or does the pacing drag?
After finally surviving the brutal halls of Basgiath War College alongside Violet Sorrengail, I have some thoughts on whether this dragon-riding romantasy is actually worth your time.
The Premise: Survive or Die Trying
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to live a quiet life surrounded by books in the Scribe Quadrant. Instead, her commanding general mother forces her into the Rider's Quadrant—an elite, deadly war college for dragon riders where the graduation rate is terrifyingly low.
Violet is smaller and physically weaker than her peers, making her an instant target. But her biggest threat isn't the lethal obstacle courses or the fire-breathing dragons; it is Xaden Riorson, the ruthless and incredibly powerful wingleader who has a blood vendetta against Violet's mother.
Is the Enemies to Lovers Romance Actually a Slow Burn?
Yes, and it is executed brilliantly. The "enemies" portion of this trope isn't just a mild misunderstanding; Xaden genuinely has every reason to want Violet dead, and Violet is acutely aware of it.
Yarros paces the transition perfectly. We get the sharp, biting banter and the forced proximity that makes this trope so addictive, but the emotional shift feels earned. It relies heavily on the "Shadow Daddy" and "Touch Her and You Die" micro-tropes, with Xaden evolving from a terrifying threat to a fiercely protective force. The tension builds agonizingly slowly over hundreds of pages before the emotional payoff finally hits.
The Magic System and Deadly Trials Explained
Unlike some romantasy books where the fantasy takes a backseat to the romance, Fourth Wing delivers a genuinely high-stakes world. The dragons in this universe do not just offer magic; they demand respect, and they will literally incinerate cadets who show weakness.
The magic system is directly tied to the dragon a rider bonds with, resulting in unique and sometimes incredibly destructive powers (called signets). The constant threat of death—whether from the brutal training trials, unbonded dragons, or rival classmates—keeps the pacing lightning-fast.
Loved the deadly trials in Fourth Wing? If you are a fan of high-stakes magic systems, ruthless academies, and intense, morally grey tension, you will feel right at home with Amelia Cord's upcoming novel, Thorns (Book 1 of the Briar and Bone series). It's my top recommendation for readers who want more brutal, heart-pounding trials!
Spice Level and Content Warnings
Before you read Fourth Wing, it is important to know exactly what you are getting into.
- Spice Level: 🌶️🌶️🌶️/5. The first half of the book is entirely focused on world-building and slow-burn tension. However, once the physical relationship begins in the latter half, there are several explicit, on-page scenes.
- Is it a standalone? No. Fourth Wing is the first book in The Empyrean series, and it ends on a massive, jaw-dropping cliffhanger.
- Content Warnings: Graphic violence, death of friends/classmates, war themes, and chronic illness/pain representation.
The Verdict
Fourth Wing absolutely lives up to the hype. It is a masterclass in pacing, blending the adrenaline-pumping survival elements of The Hunger Games with the intense, swoon-worthy romance of the best New Adult fantasy. If you love dragons, deadly trials, and a romance that makes you want to throw the book across the room (in a good way), this needs to be your next read.
Final Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
